This event made Treetops famous around the world, but by the time the Princess heard about the death of her father she and the Duke of Edinburgh had left the hotel and were staying at Sagana Lodge – a farm about 20 miles from Treetops, in the foothills of Mount Kenya. This had been a wedding present from Kenya to the royal couple, and was built between 1949 and 1950.
Elizabeth II was the first British monarch since George I to be outside Great Britain at the moment of succession, and also the first in modern times whose exact time of accession was not known (because her father had died in his sleep at an unknown time).
